Winter Care for Your Indoor Jungle: Keeping Houseplants Happy All Season

Winter can be a trying time for both plant parents and their leafy companions. As the days grow shorter and the air becomes drier, many houseplants go into a quieter phase, adjusting to the new rhythms of the season. But with a little extra attention and some cozy care, you can help them thrive until spring!

As winter settles in, one of the most important changes is in how we water. Many plants are content with less frequent watering during these colder months since their growth naturally slows. Instead of sticking to your usual routine, try checking the soil first. If it’s still a bit damp, your plant might be saying, “Not yet, thanks.” When you do water, aim for room-temperature or slightly warm water to avoid shocking those sensitive roots.

Humidity is another big need, especially for our tropical friends. With heaters running and windows closed, the air can get pretty dry—leading to those crispy leaf edges that are all too common this time of year. A humidifier nearby can make a big difference, or you can try grouping plants together for a natural humidity boost. Even a cozy pebble tray with a little water can work wonders, creating a mini rainforest right on your windowsill.

Light, too, can be in short supply during these darker days. If your plant collection seems a bit stretched toward the window, it might be yearning for more brightness. Moving plants closer to a sunny spot can be a game-changer, but if natural light is limited, don’t hesitate to bring in a grow light for a little added “sunshine.”

Winter also calls for a pause on fertilizer. Just like us, our plants aren’t as hungry when they’re in rest mode. Hold off on feeding until spring, when the warmer days and fresh growth signal it’s time for a little extra nourishment.

Lastly, a good leaf-cleaning session can work wonders! Dust tends to settle on leaves in the winter, blocking what little light they do get. Wiping them down with a damp cloth helps them soak up more of that precious light—and gives you a chance to connect with each plant, even if it’s just a simple “Hey, how are you doing?"

So, here’s to a cozy winter with your indoor jungle. A little extra warmth, a touch more care, and a sprinkle of patience will have your houseplants looking their best and ready to greet the sunny days of spring!
